Tuesday, 2/1- Continue to evaluate student essays in AP Prep


I. Read over example Argument Essays from last year's exam.


-In assigned groups you will evaluate according to the following guidelines:

**DIRECTIONS: GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT ESSAY EVALUATION: 

1. Approach- 

               A. SOAPSTONE

              B.  What Defensible position did the writer select for each essay?

              C. How did they incorporate their Rhetorical Devices in connection to their thesis to prove their argument? (You are evaluating their approach to writing the essay in questions 1 and 2)

2. Style- What stylistic elements did the writer use?

3. -Language- Evaluate the language utilized throughout the essay

6. Organization- Intro, Organization, Thesis, Parallel , Blueprint - Do they establish the foundation for the overarching thesis?

7. Claims and evidence- Generally jot down the claims in each paragraph and the evidence produced.  Are they connected and fluid to the over-arching thesis?

8. Transitional fluency

9. Notable points from the AP Central Evaluation/ Commentaries


More Directions:

A. Read the prompt, make your own SOAPSTONE

B. In Groups you will evaluate the essay samples graded by AP Central/ College Board.

C. Evaluate using the guidelines above.

D. Indicate the letter and grade assigned to each essay.

E. After you Review each essay, review the commentary provided by AP Central

In her book Gift from the Sea, author and aviator Anne Morrow Lindbergh (1906–2001) writes, “We tend not to choose the unknown which might be a shock or a disappointment or simply a little difficult to cope with. And yet it is the unknown with all its disappointments and surprises that is the most enriching.” 

Write an essay that argues your position on the value of exploring the unknown. 

In your response you should do the following:

 • Respond to the prompt with a thesis that presents a defensible position.

 • Provide evidence to support your line of reasoning.

• Explain how the evidence supports your line of reasoning.

 • Use appropriate grammar and punctuation in communicating your argument.

B. Terms/ concepts with explanations- I have noticed that you are not fully explaining the concepts and examples.

2. Provide SPECIFIC EXAMPLES

a. clip and paste examples into your notes

b. explain examples after each pasted example from the video

3. Explain examples and notes

4. Make a TAKE AWAY section at the end of each video.  Provide personal tips learned from the content AND/ OR ANALYSIS OF EACH VIDEO.



Overrated Essay- I added ten minutes to the essay.  55 minutes total.  You are required to copy your essay on to a Word/ google doc for peer evaluation.  

You must print out 3 copies of your essay.

Underline your thesis and highlight your blueprint.

I. -Peers will use the following rubric to evaluate and score the essay.  You must make notes for each section

-Peers must include two positive comments about the paper

-Individuals will also score their own and compare
